The childhood legacy of a Batman

As a general rule, I don’t write about my son. However, recent events make this an exception.

 

My son, Ian, lives at a whole level of nerd I don’t entirely understand. While I might be yearning for the days of a young Han Solo who actually could pass as the handsomely roguish bandit or can debate the virtue of owning a tribble or not, the closet door to my nerdom slams firmly shut at the mention of anime, Pokemon, nerdcons and “Dungeons and Dragons.”

Blessed with talent: The man behind the trophy-making of the Hopkins County Stew 

“This is hackberry that had started to rot,” said Frank Sears, 86, as he picked up a pen he had made from the wood.

The hackberry wood was from a tree that had fallen in the churchyard where he attends church. So, he collected it and now gives pens made from that hackberry tree to the members of his church.

Fatigue-clad soldiers voluntarily hoisted 40-pound rucksacks to march along the rock-strewn back roads outside Medina on Saturday. They marched in small groups for 26 miles. When they arrived at their destination, exchanging boots for flip-flops and cushioned insoles, many of them stepped lightly, some limped a little — but not one complained.
